Jolines Final Release Questions–Answered.

NMD 206 Final Project

class presentation: (5-7 minutes)

TIPS:
-be sure your presentation is clear, concise and brief

going through the grand revealing of my project ( a post that has done previously ) will take up time and putting in more of my own intuitive sight on the whole scenario I’m trying ot create will also take care of a lot of this time period, along side of presenting and explaining each poster.

-focus on the highlights of your work and 3 topics below

The highlights of my work are the underlying inspirations for each peace and how each interpreted poster can be transformed into a board graphic that can be had for years and shown to as many people as possible.

-use your website/blog as you need to show product, process, or learning.

consider it done.

Part 1 What did you make?

-begin on your blog page for your project. this page should clearly state what the project is, with photos or video, and possibly a link to a page where the project actually resides if the project is a web-based project. For an example see: http://lindsayheald.wordpress.com/release/

-show your full project
Lindsey’s was a full website with the front interface for the RidesForMe project; yours might be a T-shirt, or video, or chalk board

My website blog and posters to show for the project.

-be sure you have addressed the following: research, tools, content, format, peers, audience. While you may not show these pages, they will help you with parts 2 & 3  of this presentation.

Part 2: How did you make it?

-describe the original goal, challenges, how you met the challenges, and what you ended up with.

My original idea was posted before as an approach/intent, but I’ll catch you readers up to speed with a short version. Since I’ve been snowboarding I’ve seen what a great conversation starter snowboards and skis can spark on a lift ride with their graphics alone. What an easy window to take advantage of and place meaningful designs for communication between people of all demographics who do the same activity. At first I was going to do 6 posters and 1 board rendition of a poster–but I felt such a disconnect from the snowboard theme that I transferred my idea to 3 posters and each poster’s key components that really represented the message was then transferred to the board silhouette to represent it’s own board design as well. Ending product with 6 posters.

-what tools, software, filters, helpers etc did you use to achieve your goals?

I used Adobe Illustrator to render out my ideas and found inspiration from already existing websites or color schemes to guide me through to my final products.

Part 3: What did you learn?

-what was your original question or inspiration?

The question is and always will be, how can we most accurately and intriguingly represent the cause or person in a aesthetically pleasing design that can be applied to whatever the customer/product needs to be communicated.

-what did your research, creative work or assessment of audience teach you?

Research amongst many snowboard sites such as EVO.com Burton.com K2.com to guide me towards previous designs that have made it to the top along with listening to the customers requests and requirements is what really lead me to find ease in my final renditions of posters/board designs.

-what do you know now that you didn’t before your project? & -how have you grown?

Even if there is a steady plan laid out ready to be executed, emotions and needs need to be listened to intuitively as a designer so that your ending products show the heart and care that was put into the final products.

Intent for project

For the past 3 months I have been brainstorming ways to go about tackling a project of a design series devoted to 3 or 4 separate (under the radar) organizations, causes, current events that really draw attention mentally from people who care to put concern in that direction. I would take these designed posters and artworks which could be sold individually as prints of all sizes for students in their dorm rooms or on etsy.com to get my work out in the light. I would then take it a step further and adjust the design to be scalable to fit the dimensions of the average snowboard.

The reason behind the board→ I have had the same snowboard for the past 5 years…I’ll admit (even though it breaks my heart) that it may be time to put her on the shelf and get a new one. Maybe its my designing eye—but I refuse to ride a board that doesn’t reflect the kind of person I am style wise, in terms of composition and color it will end up playing a huge role in the decision I make on my next purchase.

The perfect selection of color combinations, the (hard to see) matt swirl design placed on the shiny graphics to create a multi textured feel and look which hidden pictures and words which always keep you searching. Every time I have gotten my board out of the closet for a new season I get the same reaction EVERY time, “Shelby, that IS you in board form, it looks like you designed that yourself.” This has fueled my desire to design snowboards for men and women alike to find the board that perfectly represents their personality and passion on a board that brings a community of people together every season on and off of the mountain. The winter sports community has such a diverse creative group of people in it that I am a proud member of this active universal club.

CAPSTONE: Business, creative customization, website where a group of people can direct their requests to me for designs and I can create a snowboard or ski graphic towards them so that there is viral media and a way to get the word out with this community for what they’re doing.

The board series in display setting would have all front designs of boards facing out about 4 feet away from a wall—a mirror (large) is on the wall so that while looking at the boards you can see the bottom of the board as well and at the same time so you can see how they relate to each other.

Tues 3/13 questions one, two, three, four

Question one.) 1. Clifford Geertz says, “Every culture loves its own form of violence.” In what way do video games confirm this? What forms of violence do they represent? Geertz says the forms of violence are not always the actions that are bloody, but rather the unequal systems and structures that are created by violent means and then perpetuated. Pick a game that reveals not the superficial violence but the deeper structural violence of our culture and explain that form of violence.

Call of duty and war games re-depict the aspects of being out in the battlefield and virtually face things that our real soldiers do on a daily basis for years at a time. We find PLEASURE in reenacting situations of real life events that take lives of our own people. Modern Warfare also reenacts the issues and situations that take place. The user of the game is dropped off at a location—given certain assignments and objectives—the only way to be successful is to kill others, steal and overcome and be dominant over others that are in worse situations or on the opposing team (even though knowledge of why they are on the other side is not necessarily clear)

“threats that we are defending ourselves against are illusive”

–cancer, driving accidents, texting while driving, alcohol poisoning; things that are out of  control and at the same time controlling our actions leave us followingi the rules that have been laid down for us.

New Economy shows us different alternative situations that go against the stream that we’re all in currently.

Repetition compulsion: repeating something that concerns you for the reactionà a movement that continues. It continues so that we can find the resolution for this issue

Playing these games can help people identify with the issues that are presented in the situations that the games throw you in.

Question 2.)

Immersion into this virtual world. Opening scenes of movies or games really engage the mind or push you away. What is the hook specifically that keeps you there? Natural reactions to a fire in a mansion and super human ability which intrigues people.

The dream space; creates reality–if you can’t dream it, it can’t become a real thing. If you control the dream space of a culture, you control the culture. People take advantage of the control they can place and the reactions they can pull from society with the information and representations that are put forth.

We are allowed to virtually play it, while the bigger “higher” ups play it daily on society and those that are on the receiving end.

Structural Violence–>people who pay off the rulers to get a free pass can surpass the rules to continue on, while those who can’t afford it get in the most trouble.

Question 3. stops representing the game and starts being real life.

see how much you can get away with virtually before they get caught. what is the boundary, where is the line being drawn, what are the least amount of consequences I can receive. the sky is the limit virtually.

Physically experiencing the pain that is occuring in the game is another form of experiencing and being more involved with the situations that you are seeing visually.

“TEKKEN” Torture Tournament; electrodes are pushing people as far as they can go. “Fighting is the way of surviving”-Joline

De-sensitizing people to the violence; being overexposed to violence with the news and television. Video games also DE-sensitize them. Engage and Teach people what to do in situations in real life, the virtual reality is made unreal, untouchable.

question 4.) Re inscribe real life situations.

Male figures rule the game world. “only a handful of games where the woman is the main subject” and even then she is greatly warped to satisfy what the man wants a woman to be and look like sexually. “big boobs, tiny waist”

Do people actually assign themselves to their real roles.

question 5.)

America’s army–back door draft. There is a physical difference between being out in the field and sitting in the comfort of your own home and playing a virtual game. How can a game prove the eligibility of a person in a real war world scenario. An intrigue to young men who have been drawn to the “cool tactics” of being in the army and leaving out all of the negative aspects of real life war–death, injury and harm.

Class Questions: what is it that is learned from an Army game? Reaction times and quickened reactions along with team work.

Killing people, naturally?

Humans don’t really want to kill each other naturally–there is an extreme guilt from people who have killed multiple people.

The Fantasy Beyond Control

” Life is a moving target and any object that is isolated becomes history.”

That quote holds more truth in it than people may like to think. Things that are historical and remembered in our brains and records are things that we took time to acknowledge and be sure to take record of it–in comparison to all great things that have occurred but were not documented, recorded, and forgotten.

This piece written by Hershmen was very interesting to me, that she submersed herself in the artistic statement for those to see and understand what message she was trying to get across. The strength and courage put into subversive artistic creations is admirable and overlooked by many. I’m glad that Joline has asked us to read into this ladies accomplishments and take notice of what she has done.

Lessons Learned: Approach

The approach for this would be a visual representation of events that the user can recall. Events will then be categorized and interpreted by the program to create a profile for the user to determine what characteristics, qualities, lessons the person may have drawn or pulled for said event.

I am specifically fond of the twister styled or declining swirling ribbon view of the timeline; having oldest events in the smaller bottom and then as the memories become more recent the ribbon becomes wider–> this way you are able to constantly rewind and add on for as long as you wish to have the Lessons Learned application applied to your life.

Chapter 4::Edge of Art

Political Design: Hacktivism, Hacking Captialism, Hacking Legal Code, Hacktivist Art Accountability, Bringing Biotech Down to Earth, Outing the Old Boys Network, Non Geographic Nation, Executable Literature, Cyber Squatting on A Corporate Domain,  De commercializing the Art World, Publicizing the Private Web, Creative Cloning, Corporate Takeover.

This chapter really incorporates all of the main topics that we covered while going over Hacktivism in class discussion during the first month of this Spring semester.

Hacking Capitalism & Legal Code definitely represents the connection that hackers and people who are electronically savvy enough to represent movements and thoughts online implement and affect the legal system and those who are involved in making important decisions that affect the mass groups of people. There are many projects that have been implemented to improve appearances and political parties while other projects are souly to represent the word of the people and what they wish to achieve and have heard.

Hacking Legal Code, Hacktivist Art Accountability: The way that people can get their points across and and instate laws that dictate how we surf the web and what we’re allowed to view. Hacktivist movements like SOPA and PIPA where people join forces online and to prove that as a whole people who are feeling the same way about topics and decisions that affect our day-to-day lives is an incredible poewr to have. Art accountability digitally means that these people who want to represent their abilities of programming and graphic design online and to be represented so that people can give notice and credit to the message that is trying to be portrayed.

Non Geographic Nation: People can communicate easily on a global scale within seconds compared to physical letters and mail which means that if a mass amount of people want to deliver a meaningful desire or message it can be received and understood and acted upon within  moments. this helps also to develope deeper relationships over great periods of times to stay connected and have a form of communication.

The yes Men Fix the World:

How do you justify compensating suffering people from an industrial tragedy with JUST under 1000$?

“I found it refreshing”à the golden skeleton in the closet. It’s unbelievable to me that people who are making money and running their “dream” businesses are saying that if a few bodies are at cost to make them a couple dimes then it is all worth it in the end.

Unintended harm was brought to the people of Bhopal as they were rewarded and then robbed of 12 billion.

Economy and control over the market control what corporate wants:

The perspective of this cartoonist is pointing out that the cartoon represents that all ideas together do not work or correspond.

The perspective of the man business cartoon saying that he is at first conservative and then switches into a more exploitative point of how he got what he wanted.

Healthy plantations: genocide of the people who were there (the trail of tears) bought slaves who were violently taken from home lands to get the work so that the money could be given to the white man and slave owner.

Comparable to the “Golden Skeleton”—if it works for me in the end that’s all that matters.

Colbert: Neutral Man’s Burden—I have to think about people in my own family who face discrimination as being white.

Being “neutral”—

Roomie Connection:

  • House setting
  • Calendar
  • Draconian policy: have a voice and if you don’t show up you don’t get to decide.
  • Use it or lose it
  • Ways of understanding why this is necessary
  • List off ways of transportation/times/ways of getting there
  • Not functional mock up of what it would look like and how it functions.

Quotes and provoked thoughts from Hacktivism

Altaire-people were making  computers and they were not the size of a house.

People joined together to make their own computers without the “okay go ahead” from a business man or big head.

Joline- “what these people were doing with computers was playful…not as big of a deal as people were making it out to be”

A law defines what theft is and what it isn’t. if you come and take land it’s not theft (development of America) and it’s a cultural invention that dictates where material things and ideas belong for the owners well benefit.                  (most laws protect private property)

Hobby computer was quickly turned into a mass produced computer. The output of a couple hundred dollars and getting an order for 50k and then turned out making half a bill a year.

Edge of Art–Designing Politics

Hackers with a cause can be perfectly represented by the group that goes by “Anonymous” They are people who have drive to make statements via the web and technology and have made such a statement in the past decade that their hacktivist methods have been world wide recognized. In comparison to Political Design there is a more diplomatic drive and reason to be proved with what is being said and represented to the public. Such as in current political situations with those candidates who are running for President–much political design goes into the thought process of how this single human is represented and portrayed by millions of people in our country and billions world wide.

Almost anything that is referred to as executable means that there is something being called to action or work when it occurs. An executable file is referring to something that this file is going to do for the user. Execution and Representation are defined as two completely different things, as stated by the dictionary;

“Execution:  the carrying out or putting into effect of a plan, order, or course of action”

“Representation:the action of speaking or acting on behalf of someone or the state of being so represented”

Execution is about the following through with an Idea–> such as our third step of idea development that we will be doing this semester.

Representation is the form or state that we chose to execute these ideas and in what way we follow through with it.

The “Yes Men Save the World” film that was shown to us in class revealed two hacktivist men who put their clever charm to the test to not only fool people on the receiving end of the issues but the causing people of the issues as well into seeing obvious problems that are overlooked for the sake of gaining $$$. For reasons many people cannot understand, hacktivists (for the most part) are coming from an honest point of view to represent the unspoken truths that are hidden by larger companies that have the abilities to conceal dishonest facts about their production and resourcing for their corporations.

As a nation and planet we are connected with an internet connection that gives us the power to create, maintain and diminish relationships at the click of a button or type of a word; Hacktivists use this to their advantage while reaching out to the public eye and revealing things in mass quantities to all who are available to see it. This causes multiple questions and opinions to form; allowing the hacktivists to take part in stirring the pot of questions reguarding what is “right” for the people not only of the united states (rich or poor) but for those of every nation and the connections that have already been made.
